No Country argues for a rethinking of the genre of working-class literature. Sonali Perera expands our understanding of working-class fiction by considering a range of international texts, identifying textual, political, and historical linkages often overlooked by Eurocentric and postcolonial scholarship. Her readings connect the literary radicalism of the 1930s to the feminist recovery projects of the 1970s, and the anticolonial and postcolonial fiction of the 1960s to today's counterglobalist struggles, building a new portrait of the twentieth century's global economy and the experiences of the working class within it.

Perera considers novels by the Indian anticolonial writer Mulk Raj Anand; the American proletarian writer Tillie Olsen; Sri Lankan Tamil/Black British writer and political journalist Ambalavaner Sivanandan; Indian writer and bonded-labor activist Mahasweta Devi; South African-born Botswanan Bessie Head; and the fiction and poetry published under the collective signature Dabindu, a group of free-trade-zone garment factory workers and feminist activists in contemporary Sri Lanka. Articulating connections across the global North-South divide, Perera creates a new genealogy of working-class writing as world literature and transforms the ideological underpinnings casting literature as cultural practice.

This publication is the second in the BSRIA series on legionaires' disease (Ref 8). It is specifically concerned with hot and cold water services, which continue to account for the majority of identified cases of legionnaires' disease in the UK. Technical guidance on reducing the risk of legionellosis in the UK was introduced by the Government in the early 1990s in the "Health and Safety" series booklet, HS(G)70, Ref 1. This was first issued in 1991 and subsequently revised in 1993 in order to relect a greater awareness that a temperature regime for controlling legionella bacteria was not always achievable and other methods of water treatment, such as ionization, could be used if they could be shown to be as effective as a temperature regime. In 1994, BSRIA set up a research project to assess the effectiveness of ionization at reduced water temperatures against a temperature regime for the control of microbiological contaminants, including legionella bacteria in hot and cold water systems. The project results showed that whilst a temperature regime still remains the primary method of control advocated in HS(G)70 there a number of concerns regarding its efficacy. In particular, the results highlighted the potential problems of using a temperature regime for hot and cold water systems, and compared these to ionization. The results of ionization water treatment showed that it can be an effective strategy in hot and cold water installations provided that the application is properly assessed and designed as part of an overall water treatment regime by reputable and experienced companies.

Meticulous in its research, encyclopedic in its detail, this reference volume is the first such work written for a shape-note songbook. Modeled on the various guidebooks to contemporary denominational hymnals, it provides commentary on every text, tune, author, and composer represented in M. L. Swan’s New Harp of Columbia, a shape-note book originally published in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1867.

The shape-note tradition first flourished in the small towns and rural areas of early America. Church-sponsored “singing schools” taught a form of musical notation in which the notes were assigned different shapes to indicate variations in pitch; this method worked well with congregants who had little knowledge of standard musical notation. Today many enthusiasts carry on the shape-note tradition, and The New Harp of Columbia (recently published in a “restored edition” by the University of Tennessee Press) is one of five shape-note singing manuals still in use.

In the opening sections of this Companion, Marion J. Hatchett provides fascinating historical background about early American composers and folk-hymn compilers and the rise of the shape-note tradition. He then discusses earlier East Tennessee tunebooks before turning to The New Harp of Columbia and its 1848 predecessor, W. H. Swan and M. L. Swan’s Harp of Columbia. In the commentaries that follow, Hatchett traces each text and tune to its origin and notes significant changes between the original publication and the subsequent New Harp. His discussions draw on the latest research and uncover earlier sources for a number of tunes and texts than have been previously cited.

This work will be of great value for music scholars and folklorists as well as for the singers who keep the New Harp performance tradition alive. Also, because many of the songs overlap with those contained in other extant shape-note books, this Companion will also interest those who study and use The Christian Harmony, The Sacred Harp, The Southern Harmony, and Harmonica Sacra.

The Author: Before his retirement in 1999, Marion J. Hatchett was professor of liturgics and music in the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He has published numerous books on church music and was a member of the drafting committee for the 1979 Book of Common Prayer.
